(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 18 July 2003, Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoist) rebels threatened to kill journalist Kedar Katuwal for allegedly supplying information about the Beltar forest area to security forces. Katuwal is a representative of the state-run Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) news agency and vice-chairman of the Nepal Press Union, Udayapur section.
In a separate incident, on 22 July, unidentified assailants attacked journalist Rajesh Mishra with a knife. The incident occurred while Mishra was waiting for a taxi in Kalopul, Kathmandu. He was seriously wounded in the head, chest, eye and leg. Mishra is a news editor for Nepal One Television Channel, which is broadcast from New Delhi, India. He is also a former executive committee member of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ).
CEHURDES condemns the attacks against the journalists and calls on the Maoists rebels and civil society to ensure the safety of journalists and free expression activists.
