(PPF/IFEX) – On 17 August 1998, Asif Khokar, chief editor of the daily
“Insaf”, Basar Khokar, bureau chief of the daily “Insaf”, and Ch.Yaseen
Saleemi, a Pakistan Press International (PPI) correspondent, were fired upon
by the accused of a gang rape. The firing injured one of the journalists and
caused damage to their car.
The journalists, who are based at Pind Dadan Khan (a village in Punjab
province), had reported a gang rape of an 18-year-old orphan girl of Aadowal
(a village near Pind Dadan Khan), who was confined and repeatedly assaulted
for six consecutive days.
The Islamabad Crime Reporters Association (ICRA) has condemned the incident
and criticised the reinstatement of Abdul Ghani, SHO (Station Head Officer)
at Waris Khan Police station, who at the time of the incident was the SHO of
Pind Dadan Khan and was suspended for not registering the FIR (First
Information Report) against the accused of the gang rape. ICRA is demanding
the arrest of the culprits and the immediate suspension of Abdul Ghani.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mirza Mohammad Ali, has summoned
both the parties to his office to probe the incident.
