(ISAI/IFEX) – According to ISAI, on 3 April 1998, Indonesian anti-riot
police beat two Indonesian journalists and seized film from two foreign
journalists while the reporters were covering a crack-down on student
protests in the Javanese city of Yogyakarta.
It was reported in the Indonesian media that journalists Bambang Soen, of
the daily “Republika”, and Dewi Gustiana, of the evening newspaper “Suara
Pembaruan”, were both beaten in the incident.
Police also arrested Akhihiro Nonaka, a journalist with the Japan-based
“Asia Press”, and photographer Anthony Ashley of the Perth-based “West
Australian” newspaper. During two hours of questioning, the Yogyakarta
police forced Nonaka and Ashley to hand over their film, arguing that they
should have asked for police permission to take the photos.
Scores of other Indonesian journalists were also threatened by the police.
One of them collapsed due to tear gas used by police.
