(RSF/IFEX) – According to information released by Reporters sans frontieres
(RSF) on 25 May 1998, on 18 May, Jose Kajangwa, director general of the
national radio and television agency (RTNC), was arrested in Kinshasa with
four of his colleagues. They were arrested after images of the massacre of
civilian populations in Africa were broadcast on television. Kajangwa is
being held at the national information agency (ANR).
On 21 May, Thierry Kyalumba, publication director of the independent
tri-weekly “Vision” was arrested for “printing false information.” The
previous day the paper had published an article concerning the trial of
three political prisoners. Kyalumba is also being held at the ANR.
Also, Bonsange Yema, editor of the newspaper “L’Alarme”, who was detained on
7 February 1998 for publishing a statement demanding the release of a
political opponent, is still being held by the authorities. His trial is
being postponed sine die.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
and Political Rights, Article 19 of which guarantees the freedom to inform
and to be informed, and asking them to respect this fact
