(CEHURDES/IFEX) – According to the daily “Rajdhani”, ten pro-Maoist journalists were sent to the Bhadragol detention center in Kathmandu by the authorities. The detained journalists, who were arrested on 26 November, are: editor Govinda Acharya, executive editor Khil Bahadur Bhandari, reporter Dipak Sapkota, editorial assistant Dipendra Sapkota and a computer operator, Rambhakta Maharjan, all from the weekly “Janadesh”; executive editor Iswarchandra Gyawali and assistant editor Manarishi Dhital from the monthly “Dishabodh”; and editor Om Sharma and a computer operator, Dipak Mainali, from the daily “Janadisha”. The journalists were arrested at their respective newspaper offices a few hours before the declaration of a “state of emergency” on 26 November. They are charged with being closely associated to the underground Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoist). Furthermore, Nim Bahadur Budhathoki, a computer operator from the monthly “Dishabodh”, who was arrested on 25 November, is also detained at the Bhadragol detention center.
Basanta Pokhrel, consultant editor of “Jana Sangharsa”, and Dolaram Ghimire, editor of the daily “Mechi Kali” based in Butwal (west Nepal), who were arrested on 29 November, were recently released.
