JOURNALISTS RECEIVE DEATH THREATS
Terrorists believed to be supporters of the ruling party have sent death threats to Jamaluddin, a staff reporter for the daily Manavzamin, and Bakhtiar Islam Munna, a correspondent for the daily Ittefaq, both of whom work in the Feni district.
According to a general diary filed with the Feni Sadar Thana [police station], the daily Prothom Alo reported that on Thursday 14 March 2002 the former vice president of the Feni district Chattradal (the student wing of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, BNP), Mushfiqur Rahman, threatened to kill the journalists and all of their family members. After receiving the threat via a cellular phone, (no: 017 173824), the two journalists met with the Deputy Commissioner and Police Superintendent. They lodged a general diary with the police the same day. Mushfiqur is a wanted terrorist in the area. His name appears on the police’s wanted terrorists list. Thus far, Mushfiqur has not been arrested.
