(IJC/IFEX) – The Independent Communications Network Limited (ICNL),
publisher of “TheNews” magazine, has alleged that two of its reporters, Tony
Orilade and Iyobosa Uwugiaren, who are the Abuja corresponts of the
magazine, have received death threats from unknown persons.
A statement issued by “TheNews” managing editor Babafemi Ojudu on 15 July
1999 said that separate calls were made by midnight on that day to each of
the reporters, and that the callers threatened that: “I just want to tell
you are a goldfish and we shall deal with you one by one.”
According to Ojudu, the threats were suspected to have been made by agents
of the embattled speaker of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Salisu
Buhari, whom the magazine in its current edition alleged falsified
certificates and his age in order to stand for election in the House of
Representatives.
