(RSF/IFEX) – Jipo Felix George, Dennis Ayodele Smith, Mildred Hancilles and
Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, four journalists who were sentenced to death for
collaborating with the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) military junta,
have been released after spending 200 days in jail.
George was the director-general of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service
(SLBS), Smith was programming director, Hancilles was an SLBS journalist and
Kargbo was editor-in-chief of “The New Citizen”, one of the country’s oldest
independent newspapers.
The court which had sentenced them to death for treason had not been fair
and impartial. The journalists had always declared their innocence.
