Two journalists have been arrested by police on 30 March 1995,
apparently as a result of an article they wrote in the newspaper
“Harian Metro”. Johor police detained Yusaini Ali and Saniboey
Mohd Ismail at their office. They are apparently being held under
the Official Secrets Act (OSA) regarding a story on the
kidnapping of Ang Choon Foong. After Ang Choon Foong was released
by her captors and police arrested four suspects, the journalists
quoted confidential sources in a follow-up article. Johor CID
chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Il Ali Hanaflah says the two
are being held because their article was based on information
that although released to the press, was considered “classified.”
If charged and convicted the two journalists face minimum prison
sentences of one year.
