(IFJ/IFEX) – Judge Juan Vera Abregú of the 47th Criminal Court said that in
the next few days Gustavo Mohme Llona, editor of the “La República”
newspaper, would be charged for slander. Vera Abregú is presiding over one
of the three current cases against Héctor Faisal Fracalossi, legal
representative of the “Association for the Defense of the Truth” (Asociacion
Pro Defensa de la Verdad, APRODEV) (see IFEX alerts).

Judge Vera Abregú stated that information recently published in “La
República” is defamatory. The judge was referring to an article which
reported on his sudden replacement of judge Antonia Saquicuray Sánchez on
the bench. Before being replaced, Saquicuray Sánchez had ruled in favor of
journalists Luis Iberico, Cecilia Valenzuela and businessman Baruch Ivcher
and against Faisal in a slander suit. Nevertheless, Vera Abregú did not
specify which parts of the article he had difficulties with.
According to a Thursday 27 May 1999 “La República” article, Vera Abregú’s
accusation is unjustified, as in the newspaper’s recent editions the judge’s
name is briefly mentioned in some articles which focus on the APRODEV case.
No article was exclusively focused on the judge.
