On 10 July 1996, RSF renewed its appeals for the release of
journalist Chawki Amari, the political cartoonist of the
privately-owned daily “La Tribune” who remains in detention. On
the afternoon of 10 July, an examining judge denied Amari’s
request for bail. The public prosecutor’s office requested the
detention of “La Tribune”‘s managing director and managing editor,
on whom legal restrictions have been placed pending trial.
However, the request was denied by the Algiers appeals court.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to Algerian authorities:
urging that they do everything in their power to lift the
restrictions placed on Khaireddine Ameyar and Baya Gacemi, and to
allow “La Tribune” to resume publishing
