(JED/IFEX) – The pro-government daily “L’Avenir”‘s computers, including those necessary for the administration of the newspaper’s website, have been seriously damaged by soldiers. The newspaper’s management released a statement to this effect on Monday 9 October 2000 in Kinshasa.
JED notes that “L’Avenir” has not been published since Saturday 7 October. However, “L’Avenir”‘s management has stated its intention to begin publishing anew as soon as the newspaper’s computer equipment has been repaired.
To recall, on the morning of Friday 6 October, soldiers of the Seventh Military Region of the Congolese Armed Forces (FAC) burst into the headquarters of “L’Avenir” in Kinshasa/Gombe, and arrested all the journalists and media workers who happened to be present. The soldiers also dismantled and removed all of the newspaper’s computers and communications equipment. A few hours later, after being interrogated at the Kokolo Military Base in Kinshasa/Bandalungwa, the detained individuals – some of whom were beaten – were released and the seized materials were returned.
