(NDIMA/IFEX) – On 31 March 1998, Assistant Minister Fred Gumo was restrained
from hitting Njehu Gatabaki, his parliamentary colleague and owner of
“Finance” magazine, over an article which is currently appearing in the
magazine.
Gumo was literally pushed away by Sergeant-at-Arms J. K Kenie after
threatening to beat up Gatabaki, the Member of Parliament for Githunguri.
According to NDIMA, Gumo was enraged by the banner headline in the current
issue of “Finance” magazine: “Gumo, the politics of greed, crime and
violence.”
Gumo confronted Gatabaki at a reception, minutes before President Moi
arrived for the State Opening of Parliament. Gatabaki was chatting with
opposition colleagues when Gumo interrupted, demanding to know why Gatabaki
was preoccupied “with campaign of hate and false propaganda.” He accused
Gatabaki of writing lies to the effect that he used his powers as former
chairman of the Nairobi City Commission to grab a house formerly reserved
for the mayor of Nairobi. “You keep writing lies, and this is unacceptable,
you are so stupid,” Gumo said, attracting the attention of guests who had
jammed the building for the Presidential function.
The incident ended when the Sergeant-at-Arms stepped in.
