(WiPC/IFEX) – Journalist Niran Malaolu was released on 4 March 1999
following a general pardon issued by General Abdulsalam Abubakar,
Chairman
of the Provisional Ruling Council. A group of ninety-five prisoners
sentenced for their participation in an alleged coup attempt in 1997
have
all benefited from the same measure.

WiPC is able to confirm that journalist Malaolu was released yesterday,
Thursday 4 March, from Katsina prison and was able to travel to Kaduna.
Malaolu is expected to fly to Lagos later today where his family,
friends
and colleagues will meet him.
WiPC expects to have more news about Malaolu’s state of health in a few
days
and will forward this information to the centres that have elected him
an
honorary member.
Now that Malaolu has been released there are, to WiPCâs knowledge, no
more
PEN cases imprisoned in Nigeria.
