(FNJ/IFEX) – On 2 August 2006 at about 10:00 p.m. (local time), Maoists sent a threatening message to Ram Saran Bajgain, executive editor of the Kavre-based “Chesta Weekly” newspaper and a member of FNJ’s Kavre branch.
Bajgain was called to appear at the Maoists’ People’s Court to provide clarification regarding a news item that was published in “Chesta Weekly”.
Bhola Aryal, Maoist leader in the Dapcha Area, sent Bajgain a message saying that a complaint regarding the article had been filed at the district court and requesting that he present himself at the court.
The FNJ has condemned the incident, pointing out that there is a proper legal body through which to request investigations into published news in case of disagreement with its content. The FNJ has urged the Maoists to cease all such threatening actions that violate the right to freedom of the press.
