(BIANET/IFEX) – After the mass dismissal at “Radikal” newspaper, which saw 41 journalists lose their jobs, Turkish journalists have decided to demonstrate to defend the right to be informed and the right to freedom of expression.
The rally will take place on 10 July 2007 at 10:00 a.m. (local time), at the Istanbul branch of the Turkey Journalists’ Syndicate (TGS).
In a release calling on the people to attend the rally, it was stated that in the months of May and June, many media employees at the “Hürriyet” and “Dünya” newspapers, Dogan News Agency, Star TV, “Sabah” newspaper and ATV were dismissed.
Within two weeks, the following media outlets were affected:
– “Radikal” newspaper: 41 dismissed
– “Star” newspaper: 10
– “Takvim” newspaper: 6
– Show TV: 10
– Flash TV: 10
It is expected that there will be dismissals from the “Milliyet” newspaper, too.
The TGS is protesting against the fact that “not only do journalists become unemployed, but society becomes uninformed”, too.
