(FNJ/IFEX) – A Member of Parliament has threatened a correspondent of “Rajbiraj Today” over an article of his, published on 11 November 2006.
Raj Kumar Chaudhary, who is also president of the Nepali Congress party of Saptari district, called “Rajbiraj Today” correspondent Avadesh Kumar Jha over the telephone on the day the article was published. Chaudhary threatened to damage the newspaper office at Rajbiraj, an eastern district of Nepal, by setting it on fire, and to attack the newspaper’s journalists.
According to Jha, Chaudhary then organized a press conference on the same day and threatened to damage the newspaper’s office if the FNJ Siraha branch did not take any action against the paper.
The FNJ has condemned the incident and urged Chaudhary to respect journalists’ right to freedom of expression.
