Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 10 June 2000
For immediate release
Mexican and Paraguayan Publishers Join World Press Group
Newspaper organisations in Mexico and Paraguay have joined the World Association of Newspapers, the Paris-based global industry group which now has membership of 65 national newspaper associations and more than 17,000 publications world-wide.
The two new associations, which were admitted to WAN at a meeting of its Board in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday (10 June), are the Asociacion de Editores de los Estados (AEE) of Mexico and the Asociacion de Entidades Periodisticas del Paraguay (ADEPP).
“The Latin American press is facing the same strategic challenges as newspapers everywhere and needs increasingly to be part of the global dialogue between publishers and editors that WAN provides. At the same time, readership levels remain very low and there are good opportunities
for growth,” said the WAN Director General, Timothy Balding.
The Asociacion de Editores de los Estados represents newspapers in nine Mexican states with a combined circulation of 385,000.
The Asociacion de Entidades Periodisticas del Paraguay groups five daily newspaper groups with a total circulation of about 300,000.
In addition to the 65 national newspaper organizations, WAN membership includes individual newspaper executives in 93 countries, 17 news agencies and seven regional press groups.
