(IPYS/IFEX) According to IPYS, Olga Lena Campos Chavez, 34 years old, was
sentenced to ten years in jail for the assassination of Miguel Bravo Quispe,
the mayor of the district of Yanacancha. Quispe was a correspondent for the
daily paper “El Comercio” and for Radio Programas del Peru, in addition to
being president of the College of Lawyers of Pasco. Olga Campos was the
assassinated mayor’s secretary. Bravo Quispe was killed on 7 January 1997 by
four shots from inside his pick-up truck. The crime was committed in a
deserted spot on Lake Yanamate, 9 kilometers south of Cerro de Pasco.
Judge Alfredo Granandos Tenicela’s decision was based on the multiple
contradictions in the accused’s version and on the results of forensic tests
which established that she had fired shots with the mayor’s gun. Campos
Chavez, who was still at liberty at the time of the sentencing, was arrested
and taken to the city jail after the reading of the sentence, which also
fixes an amount of 10,000 New Soles (approximately US$3550) for civil
damages. Previously, she and her lawyer stated that they will appeal the
decision to the Supreme Court at Huanuco.
It was reported that the sentencing had been delayed 6 times since 29 August
1997, because the accused’s lawyers had used a number of legal procedures in
order to slow down the process. From the beginning, the accused denied that
she had committed the crime and even attempted to confuse everyone by
bringing the body to the Cerro de Pasco Hospital herself. She later declared
that they had been assaulted.
