(CMFR/IFEX) – According to a police investigation, the 14 May 2000 murder of William Yap Yu was not related to his being the publisher of the “Pagadian City Star”. Police suspect that Yu, a successful businessman, was killed because of a real estate business deal.
Yu was also involved in other business ventures apart from publishing. He owned a hotel and a gas station in Pagadian City. He had long running feuds with Decca Judilla, general manager of Zamboanga del Sur Electric Company, and Pede Lu, publisher of “Pagadian Times” weekly newspaper. The feuding parties have led numerous cases against each other, and in 1998 police cautioned Yu to be security conscious after learning that he and his wife – the daughter of a family that owns local ferry vessels and other establishments in the city – were at the top of a kidnap-for-ransom gang’s list.
