(IMI/IFEX) – The following is a 22 January 2007 statement from IMI, an interim member of IFEX:
Mykola Rudkovskiy, the minister of transportation, is suing the weekly “Dzerkalo Tygdnya” (“Mirror of the Week”) for libel. The minister is also appealing to the commission on journalistic ethics, asking that it investigate the journalist responsible for the offending article, which was published in the 20 January 2007 edition.
The article suggests that Rudkovskiy may have private business interests in Turkmenistan and that his December 2006 encounters with some Turkmen opposition leaders – former vice-prime minister Orazov and ex-ambassador of Turkmenistan in Turkey, Khanamov – could damage relations between Ukraine and Turkmenistan.
An official statement by the ministry states that all allegations made against Rudkovskiy, a former Socialist Party MP, are groundless.
