(FNJ/IFEX) – Jagat Saud, correspondent of “Farwest”, and Prayag Joshi, correspondent of “Sudur Sandesh”, were arrested on the morning of 10 April 2006 in Dhangadi, the district capital of Kalali in western Nepal, while reporting on activities of the democratic movement organized by the Seven Party Alliance (SPA).
According to Karna Shah, the FNJ president, Dhangadi Chapter, Joshi was severely beaten by police despite having shown them his identity card.
In other incidents, Tek Raj Joshi, reporter for the Dhangadi-based radio station “Ghodaghodi FM”, as well as Tika Upreti and Prayag Joshi of “Sudur Sandesh”, were severely beaten on 9 April, also in Dhangadi. On the same day in Chitwan, Binod Poudel, correspondent of the “Annapurna Daily”, was beaten and severely injured by police. According to Janak Aryal, the FNJ president, Makwanpur Chapter, Poudel was taken home from hospital after treatment. In each case, the assaults took place as the journalists were reporting on SPA-organized events.
