(MISA/IFEX) – A Zimbabwean musician, Clive Malunga, slapped and verbally abused journalist Shepherd Mutamba on Monday 22 October 2001, at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) offices in Harare. Mutamba is the editor-in-chief of ZBC’s news department.
Malunga is reported to have barged into the newsroom while Mutamba was addressing reporters in the morning and slapped him once in the face. He verbally abused Mutamba, accusing him of failing to cover the event of a donation Malunga made to a Harare-based children’s home on Friday 19 October. Armed guards are said to have arrested Malunga, who was handed over to the police. It is reported that Malunga paid Z$500 (US$10) as an admission of guilt fine.
A source quoted by the “Daily News” said that there are moves to have Malunga banned from entering the ZBC premises. Mutamba is the second ZBC victim of Malunga’s rage. In December 2000, Malunga assaulted Malachi Nkomo, a radio disk jockey, accusing him of not playing his music.
