In comments made during his appointment last week, the new
President of Congress, Victor Joy Way, recognised the need for a
free press in the democratic process in Peru. As well, he
expressed his desire that the relationship between the media and
Congress would lead to politicians always making available
“valuable” information about the state of the nation as well as
journalists no longer being seen as adversaries, as if their
function were a greater inconvenience than the problems and
issues about which they report.
Joy Way added that the incorporation of a democratic system of
checks and balances would not necessarily lead to some kind of
“honeymoon” between the media and politicians, but rather to
responsibility on the one hand and equanimity on the other so
that the job of reporting and the “art of tolerance” would
constitute a successful blending of a “good, fluid and
respectable relationship.”
