(IPYS/IFEX) – Another underground tabloid has began circulating in the
southern city of Puno. The tabloid, called “Repútica del Gran Sur”, tries to
ridicule “La República” daily and its director, Member of Congress Gustavo
Mohme Llona.
According to IPYS’s information, the second edition of this publication,
dated 27 February 1999, does not list the address or the name of the
editorial company.
According to “La República”, some governmental sectors could be the source
of the pamphlet. Similarly to the previously published “Repúdica” and
“Repudio” – the latter of which is still in circulation in Lima – this
latest tabloid’s aim is to defame the journalists and the director of the
“La República” editorial house for its independence and denouncements of the
current government.
The Peruvian Printing Company, “La República”‘s editorial company, intends
to, together with the Puno daily “Gran Sur”, denounce this latest
publication and request that an extensive investigation be carried out to
identify the responsible parties. Similar actions were taken after the
appearance of the earlier tabloids (see IFEX alerts).
IPYS was able to confirm this information through conversations with a
number of Puno journalists who did not hesitate to suggest that the new
tabloid forms part of the smear campaign being waged against “La República”
for its open opposition to President Fujimori’s intent to stand for
re-election.
