(IPYS/IFEX) – According to IPYS, a new criminal trial began on 30 June 1998
against Baruch Ivcher under allegations of tax evasion – the same charges
as those stemming from his other trial for tax fraud. As with the case of
the daily “El Comercio”, this case is directly related to the importation of
components for the manufacturing of mattresses (the business in which
Ivcher, among others, was in) during 1992 and 1995.

Judge Nicolas Trujillo Lopez of the Customs and Taxation Court, began the
broadened trial against Ivcher by mandating his appearance in court, however
without a detention order. Ivcher is the majority owner of Frecuencia Latina
television station, but the administration of the station is currently in
the hands of its minority shareholders, the Winter brothers. Rosario Lam,
who worked with Ivcher, has been implicated in the same trial (for
background information see IFEX alert of 19 September 1997).
Ivcher is in Miami, United States of America, as he does not have any
guarantees of freedom during his ongoing trials, and also for reasons of
security, since his Peruvian nationality has been revoked and he has
received threats. His case is before the Interamerican Human Rights Court of
the Organisation of American States.
