(IJC/IFEX) – Two news vendors were arrested in Abuja on 22
September 1997 during another swoop by security agents on
newspaper distribution centres in the city. All copies of “The
News” magazine displayed for sale were also impounded. The two
arrested vendors were released later in the day. Nevertheless,
the security operatives were on the streets again on 23 and 24
September to ensure that fresh copies of the magazine were not
displayed for sale.
The actions of the security agents are believed to be in
connection with this week’s cover story of “The News”. Entitled
“More Troubles for Abacha”, the story reports Commonwealth, US
and Western pressures on General Sani Abacha’s government.
