(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Mauritania’s minister of the interior, RSF
denounced the censorship against the independent weekly “La Dépêche”. RSF
again raised the “abusive and arbitrary nature of this decision” and asked
the minister to “use his influence to see to it that Article 11 of the press
law is repealed, thereby allowing independent journalists to work freely
without being pushed into self-censorship.”
On 9 November 1999, the weekly “La Dépêche” was prevented from being
distributed, in accordance with Article 11, by the Ministry of the Interior.
The censored issue included an article on the normalisation of diplomatic
relations between Mauritania and Israel, which instigated controversy in the
country.
