(MRA/IFEX) – On 1 June 2006, Tony Eluemunor, the Abuja bureau chief of the “Daily Independent” newspaper, was arrested by officials of the State Security Service (SSS), Nigeria’s intelligence agency, on the orders of the agency’s Director General, Colonel Kayode Are.
After his arrest, Eluemunor was questioned for about 20 minutes in connection with a front page news story published by the “Daily Independent” on 1 June, entitled “Gusau sacked over contract?” The story alleged that the former National Security Adviser, Major General Aliyu Gusau, who was relieved of his position on 30 May, lost his job due to a disagreement with President Olusegun Obasanjo over a contract to purchase military weapons to combat militants in the volatile Niger delta region of Nigeria.
Eluemunor was released later in the day.
The newspaper identified the source of the information as a story posted on the website of an Israeli newspaper, “Haarretz”, on 31 May.
