(FNJ/IFEX) – On 15 March 2007, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) cadres threatened newspaper distributors at Rautahat, a central district of Nepal, warning them not to sell Nepali language newspapers in the region.
A team of MJF cadres, led by Nanda Kishor Shah, threatened the distributors not to stock or sell the dailies “Gorkhapatra” and “Kantipur”. They said that they are stopping the distribution of the two newspapers because the publications failed to report in the local language and adequately cover the Terai movement.
The FNJ has condemned the incident saying that the move is undemocratic and a threat to press freedom. FNJ urges the related parties to respect press freedom and to refrain from any activity that hinders the free flow of information.
