(MFWA/IFEX) – The Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has questioned Osbert Lartey, editor of the Accra-based weekly “Vanguard”, over a an article he published that included damaging allegations against former president Jerry John Rawlings.
The newspaper alleged that key individuals in the main Ghanaian opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including former president Rawlings and his special aide, Victor Smith, were planning to assassinate party chairman Obed Asamoah. The paper allegedly made allusion to telephone conversations between the former president, who is also founder of the NDC, and Smith.
Lartey was interviewed on 28 September 2005 at the start of investigations into the publication. Meanwhile, officials at CID headquarters said the paper may be subject to further police investigations.
