Avaz Zeynalli claims he was threatened by police chief Agalar Maharramov, following a critical article published in the newspaper "Khural."
(IRFS/IFEX) – Avaz Zeynalli, editor-in-chief of the “Khural” newspaper, has received a threatening phone call.
Zeynalli told IRFS that the newspaper published an article entitled “Police chief beaten in his office” in its 26 June 2011 edition. The article stated that the Binagadi District Police Department Chief, Agalar Maharramov, takes bribes from business institutions run by high-ranking officials in the district.
“I received a phone call from someone who introduced himself as Binagadi District Police Department Chief Agalar Maharramov. He began to insult me with inappropriate language. Then he threatened to kill me,” said Zeynalli. Zeynalli has reported the incident to the police and the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Upon being contacted by IRFS correspondents, Maharammov stated that the claim was unfounded and that he had not threatened Zeynalli.
