(MFWA/IFEX) – Egbert Faibille, managing editor of “The Ghanaian Observer”, a tri-weekly, Accra-based privately-owned newspaper, has reported to security authorities that he has been the recipient of frequent death threats.
Faibille said that the most recent threats came to him in the form of Short Message Service (SMS) messages to his mobile phone on 12 February 2007. He said one of the messages threatened his life and that of another journalist, Kweku Baako, editor of “Crusading Guide”, another privately-owned newspaper.
The message, which was published in the 13-19 February edition of the “Crusading Guide”, read: “You think your madness will work. You and Kweku Baako and all of you that are against Ewes will die one by one.”
The Ewe people are from the Volta Region of Ghana and mainly support the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Although there were no specific motives assigned to the threats, Faibille believes this latest one is in response to a story in the 11 February edition of “The Ghanaian Observer”, in which the newspaper alleged that an NDC Member of Parliament, who is an Ewe from the Volta Region, was jailed for causing financial loss to the state in the previous administration, and may soon face another court action.
