(MISA/IFEX) – On 8 November 2006, “The Times of Swaziland” newspaper was found guilty of defamation and ordered by the High Court to pay E20,000 (approx. US$3,000) in compensation to former attorney general Phesheya Dlamini, now Swaziland’s envoy to the United Nations.
The court found that, on 3 November 2003, the newspaper published an article that accused Dlamini of improper and unethical practices, bringing into question his professional integrity.
The newspaper signed an agreement to pay the E20,000 in compensation and was further ordered by the High Court to retract the defamatory article. The agreement was later made an order of the court.
On 9 November the newspaper published a retraction, apologising to the lawyer and others concerned.
