(FMM/IFEX) – The following is an FMM press release:
The Free Media Movement (FMM) expresses its concern over actions of the state security with regard to the Sinhala-language weekly Irudina, on account of an article published on claymore mines on 22 January 2006. Irudina is published by Lithira Publications.
Publication of such an article does not violate any law in the country and is an inviolable right of a free media. A number of journalists from Irudina and its counterpart in English, The Sunday Leader, were summoned by the police and questioned on various other aspects of the newspaper, including management structures of the publishing house.
These matters are not relevant to the article in question at all.
FMM views these actions as a violation of freedom of expression and considers the actions of the state security agencies as intimidating to the Irudina weekly.
Writing on claymore mines is not a threat to national security.
We seek an urgent answer as to whether the interrogation regarding management structures is driven by ulterior motives to seriously undermine the security of journalists in Sri Lanka.
