(PPF/IFEX) – On Wednesday 26 April 2000, armed persons belonging to a political party ransacked the office of the evening daily “Sham” in Hyderabad, a city in Pakistan’s southern province.
According to press reports, some 40 to 50 unidentified persons raided the newspaper office and destroyed three computers and a scanner. They also tried to set fire to the newsroom. According to the newspaper’s editor, Naz Sehto, the intruders resorted to aerial firing before fleeing from the scene. Fortunately there were no injuries as staff was not present at that time.
According to news reports, Sehto started receiving threats after publishing an article highlighting scandals relating to the leaders of a number of political parties. The newspaper then published an apology addressed to the leaders whose names appeared in the article, in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid a confrontation with their followers.
