(MISA/IFEX) – On 1 December 1998, scores of supporters of presidential
aspirant Anderson Mazoka stormed the Livingstone bureau offices of the
“Zambia Daily Mail” in protest against a lead story the previous day which
linked Mazoka to satanism, reports the “Post” newspaper.
The “Mail” carried a story titled “Devil’s club exposed” which reported that
Mazoka once admitted to being a Freemason. The story also quoted a former
Freemason as saying it was devilish.
Mazoka’s supporters demanded to see “Zambia Daily Mail” bureau chief and
author of the story, George Malunga. However, Malunga fled his office for
fear of being beaten.
Malunga told the “Post” that he had received some fifteen telephone calls
threatening to kill him. He said the calls came from different parts of the
country. Several Livingstone- based businessmen who usually patronise the
Victoria Falls Lodge also protested against the story. The story mentioned
the same lodge as a place where the Freemasons meet.
In Choma, some Mazoka supporters stormed the offices of the Zambia
Information Services, also in protest against the story. They demanded that
the story be retracted with an apology.
