(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to the minister of justice and human rights, Jean
Kouakou Brou, RSF has asked to be kept informed of progress in the
investigation into the murder of Abdoulaye Bakayoko, owner and manager of
the daily “Le Libéral” (the newspaper of the Rassemblement des Républicains,
RDR, Alassane Dramane Ouattara’s opposition party). Robert Ménard, the
organisation’s secretary-general, also asked authorities to “do everything
possible to identify and prosecute those responsible for this murder.”
According to the information gathered by RSF, Bakayoko was assassinated on
the evening of 21 September 1999. The killers shot him and fled in a
vehicle. The owner of “Le Libéral” was quickly transferred to a clinic,
where he died from his wounds later that evening.
