(IRFS/IFEX) – “Azadlig” newspaper correspondent Seymur Haziyev informs IRFS that he received threatening telephone calls for several days in mid-May 2008.
“I usually receive phone calls from hidden numbers, but these calls came from an unconcealed number,” said Haziyev. “The person called from a landline number and threatened me. He said, ‘It looks like you don’t understand who you are playing with. Why do you care who works for whom? Go write about [President] Ilham Aliyev (. . .).’ And he demanded that I stop writing articles.”
According to Haziyev, similar calls were also made to his mobile telephone during the first days of April.
“Some time ago, people called me from hidden numbers and threatened me with the same words,” Haziyev said.
Haziyev noted the number from which he received the calls. IRFS discovered that the number belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Republic.
Haziyev has been writing a series of articles about Ramiz Mehdiyev, the Head of the Presidential Administration, and believes that these threats are related to those articles.
The journalist does not plan to appeal to police for protection. “I don’t think anyone will investigate this case. And what has happened to our colleague Agil Khalil shows that appealing to some organizations or law enforcement organs turns things against you. That is why I haven’t made any appeals,” Haziyev said.
