(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Security Minister Marcel Dibonan Koné, RSF
protested the police’s seizure of the newspaper “Africa Golfe Eco”. The
press freedom organisation demanded that copies of the monthly be returned
to vendors. Robert Ménard, the organisation’s secretary-general, stated that
this seizure was “an illegal action by security forces and an attack on the
free circulation of information.”
According to information received by RSF, on 27 July 1999, police officers
seized copies of the fifth issue of this monthly, which focuses on economic
issues, in Abidjan kiosks. The security forces did not have a warrant
permitting this seizure, and refused to answer questions by the press about
the operation. The monthly included a feature on Côte d’Ivoire and a
front-page headline titled: “Disinformation, manipulation, corruption,
embezzlement, is the Bédié System at death’s door?”
