(RSF/IFEX) – In a 17 September 1999 letter to General al-Bashir, RSF
protested another suspension of the independent daily “Al-Rai Al-Akhar”. RSF
expressed its opposition to the latest suspension, which for the first time
is for an indefinite period. “This seventh suspension since the beginning of
the year can be considered a form of harassment, the aim of which is to
force journalists into self-censorship,” the organisation said, urging that
publication be resumed as soon as possible.

RSF called for “an end to this new violation of press freedom and a
situation that is harmful to freedom in Sudan.” The organisation reiterated
its request that the press law be amended and that the National Press
Council be relieved of its censorship powers, in compliance with Article 19
of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which
guarantees freedom of expression.
