(RSF/IFEX) – According to information released by RSF on 16 April 1998, the
16 April 1998 edition of the Mauritanian weekly, “Actions” was censored
without any explanation. The Minister of the Interior refused to turn over
the proof of receipt to the editors. On the same day, the weekly “Nouakchott
Infos” was seized in connection with an article on serial rapes.
Since the beginning of 1998, newspapers in Mauritania have been regularly
subjected to censorship from the Minister of the Interior, who refuses to
turn over proof of deliveries to newspapers, despite the fact that this
refusal is illegal. Proof of receipt is merely a registration formality in
Mauritania’s press laws and cannot be used as a means of censorship.
