(WiPC/IFEX) – WiPC is gravely concerned about journalist Niran Malaolu,
who is reportedly being denied urgent medical treatment despite his
rapidly deteriorating health.
On a recent visit to Katsina prison, Malaolu’s wife, Bukola, found her
husband critically ill. According to her, he has still not been treated
for typhoid fever contracted several months ago and is complaining of
pain and headaches. Particularly alarming is that Bukola reported “pus
and water [to be] constantly gushing out of [her husband’s] eyes.”
Despite repeated medical tests which have reported that Malaolu is on
the verge of losing his sight, there has been no attempt to move him to
a hospital or arrange for specialists to see him in prison. Bukola is
worried that, unless released for medical treatment immediately, Malaolu
will die in jail.
Malaolu is currently serving a fifteen-year prison term. He was
convicted and sentenced by a Special Military Tribunal for being an
“accessory to the fact of treason” after a trial which fell far short of
international standards of due process.
