(PPF/IFEX) – On 30 January 1999, three unidentified armed men ransacked the
offices of the English language daily “Khyber Mail International”, based in
Peshawar (in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province).
The attackers severely beat messenger Mohammad Javed and ransacked the
office. Javed told police that the intruders had a Kalashnikov rifle and a
pistol.
The attackers tied up Javed’s feet and smashed the furniture, fax machine
and computer monitors, and took away telephones. The deputy inspector
general (DIG) and senior superintendent police (SSP) have ordered an
investigation.
said that she had
written the Interior Minister to place the threats she received on the
record and to remind the government of its duty to protect her safety. She
reiterated her commitment to continue to uphold press freedom and the rights
of journalists to express themselves freely, as guaranteed by Pakistan’s law
and constitution. She added that such threats would not deter her from
fulfilling her duties.
