(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Minister of the Interior Vladimir Psurkanu, RSF has expressed its concern for the Russian-language daily “Novy Poriadok” in Chisinau. The organisation asked Moldovan authorities to take all necessary measures to guarantee the security of the daily’s journalists. “We note with satisfaction that an inquiry has been launched on this matter by police services,” stated Robert Ménard, the organisation’s secretary-general. “In addition, we ask that you use your influence to see to it that those responsible for these actions are found and prosecuted,” he added.
According to information gathered by RSF, in the night of 7 to 8 January 2000, the offices of the Russian-language daily “Novy Poriadok” were vandalised in Chisinau. In addition to swastikas, threats of a nationalist nature, directed at the newspaper’s journalists, were painted on the walls of the building housing the newspaper’s offices. “Novy Poriadok”, which specialises in political investigative reports, is known for its moderate tone and independence.
