(IFJ/IFEX) – The editor of “Referéndum” newspaper, Fernando Viaña Villa, is
in court accused of not having published the appropriate correction to a
story published in June 1999. Judge Percy Escobar ruled against the editor
despite the fact that “Referéndum” published a correction of an accusatory
statement made in June by members of the wholesale market “El Bosque”
association, in San Juan de Lurigancho.
The association’s president, Miguel Avalos Lopez, an alderman for the San
Juan de Lurigancho district, filed a complaint after he was accused by
merchants Fermín Buendía and Mauricio Bustencio of having committed
irregularities in awarding market stalls.
Avalos Lopez appealed to the judge to protect his reputation and Judge
Escobar in turn ruled that a correction of the story should be published.
Although the correction was published on 11 June, three days afterwards, on
14 June, the judge ruled that a new correction should be published, which
should include mention of the fact that Avalos Lopez denies the accusations
against him and affirms that he is being boycotted.
As a result, the case against Viaña continues. It was expected that the case
would be closed since it had already been proven that it had not been
Viaña’s intention to defame the plaintiff.
