(MFWA/IFEX) – Brahima Gollé, a journalist at the political desk of the pro-opposition daily, “Dernières Nouvelles d’Abidjan”, was attacked and beaten by uniformed strangers on 4 August 2005 at 10:00 p.m. (local time), in Yopougon, a suburb north of Abidjan. The attack appears to have been in retaliation for an article he had written.
Prior to the attack, the newspaper had received telephoned threats from people claiming to be members of the Republican Guards.
According to an MFWA-Côte d’Ivoire source, on 1 August the paper published an article by Gollé concerning the death of Republican Guards Corporal Arouna Diarra. On 3 August, managing editor Patrice Guehi and Gollé were summoned to a meeting with the National Gendarmerie at 5:30 p.m.
At the Gendarmerie offices the journalists requested a postponement of the meeting, which was then rescheduled for 9 August. However, before the rescheduled meeting could take place, Gollé was attacked while returning home from work. He was treated at a hospital and discharged.
