(MFWA/IFEX) – On 4 November 2005, the “Ghana Palaver” newspaper, supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, launched an appeal for funds to pay damages of 1.9 billion cedis (approx. US$220,000) ordered by a court.
The damages arose out of legal suits filed against the newspaper by Works and Housing Minister Hackman Owusu Agyeman and George Kufuor, a businessman who is the brother of President John Agyekum Kufuor, in April 2004 and September 2005.
Of the total amount, 1.5 billion cedis (approx. US$ 160,000) is to be paid to Hackman Owusu Agyeman while 440 million cedis (approx: US $60,000) is to go to George Kufuor.
The newspaper contends that without support, it is bound to go out of business and has therefore set up the “Save the Ghana Palaver fund” to receive donations from the public.
According to managing editor Jojo Bruce Quansah, the newspaper also expects some assistance from the party it supports, since the newspaper has been sympathetic to the party’s cause.
