Widespread suspicions that recognized political parties tolerate
and profit from these iniquitous practices represent a grave
threat to the democratic foundations of the Islamic Republic of
Pakistan.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to Pakistani authorities:
ensure that the eradication of criminal extortion is seen to be
one of the first priorities of the government;
political dialogue at the local level in Karachi, thus providing
a legitimate alternative to the growing culture of violence.
