(PINA/IFEX) – Weeks of World Press Freedom Day activities in the Pacific
Island nations and territories climax this weekend with debates on
broadcasting stations and special sections in newspapers.
The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA), with help from the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO),
coordinated a major campaign reaching out to all sections of Pacific Islands
societies under the theme Media Freedom is Your Freedom.
It also highlighted the 50th anniversary of Article 19 of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, and the fundamental human rights to freedom of
information and expression.
Through support from UNESCO, the PINA Secretariat in Suva produced and
distributed radio and television tapes, packages of newspaper articles,
posters and stickers.
PINA’s members in 21 countries and territories of the region mounted
national campaigns. These included public debates, quiz competitions, and
essay and art competitions for school children.
